Winter storms disrupt Buncombe County Schools' schedule, leaving parents in a bind
BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Buncombe County parents are facing unexpected challenges due to the school district's recent schedule adjustments. The district's decision to cancel an early dismissal and a teacher workday following multiple weather-related closures has caused frustration among families. Many parents had already made plans and commitments based on the original schedule, and now they're left scrambling to accommodate the changes.
Kailyn West Witenburg, a concerned parent, highlights the inconvenience, stating that the district should be more mindful of the impact on families. Others share similar sentiments, having taken time off work to support their children during remote learning days, only to discover that these days need to be made up. Kevin Nowell expresses a sense of unfairness, suggesting that the district is shifting the burden onto families while retaining the right to extend the school year.

The Buncombe County Schools have lost 24 instructional hours, bringing the total to 1,038 hours, which is just 3 hours short of the state-mandated minimum of 1,025 hours. To address this, the district has opted for full school days on Thursday and Friday. However, they have also ruled out the possibility of a 15-day remote learning waiver.
Transylvania County Schools' superintendent, Lisa Fletcher, acknowledges the potential for further disruptions. She suggests that if more snow or bad weather occurs, they might need to consider losing a workday, extending the school year, or even implementing Saturday school.
