Burnaby Schools: Proposed 3-Year Calendar 2026-2029 - Your Feedback Matters! (2026)

Exciting Update for Burnaby School District: Your Voice Matters!

The Burnaby School District is eager to hear your thoughts and opinions regarding the proposed three-year school calendar, covering the academic years from 2026-27 to 2028-29. This comprehensive calendar outlines important dates, including winter and spring breaks, as well as designated school closure days, which also encompass professional development days for the district. You have until February 10, 2026, to provide your feedback!

For a detailed overview, you can check out the school calendar summary here: Proposed School Calendar 2026-2029.

Here are some key highlights to keep in mind:

  • Alignment with Neighbors: The proposed three-year schedule is designed to be consistent with the calendars of most other school districts in the Metro Vancouver area, ensuring a cohesive educational experience for families.
  • Understanding Closure Days: Since 2014, the Burnaby School District has implemented five school closure days each year. To compensate for the instructional time that these closures create, the lost hours are redistributed across the remaining school days, ensuring that educational requirements are still met.
  • Statutory Holidays Consideration: In both the 2026-27 and 2028-29 academic years, Good Friday—a recognized public holiday—falls within the usual timeframe for spring break. Therefore, one of the designated closure days will be moved to the Friday before winter break to accommodate this holiday.
  • Professional Development Days: Each school will select two Professional Development Days throughout the school year, contributing to a total of six such days, which also includes district-wide professional days. These dates will be publicly shared in the spring prior to the implementation of the next year's calendar.
  • Commitment to Instructional Hours: Every year, Burnaby Schools ensure compliance with the mandated hours of instruction, emphasizing their dedication to maintaining quality education.
