Despite initial skepticism, the introduction of clear garbage bags at the curb has led to a remarkable transformation in waste management practices. Since its official implementation in March 2025, the clear bag program has been a game-changer, resulting in a significant increase in waste diversion.
The numbers speak for themselves: a 38% decrease in garbage tonnage and a staggering 99% increase in the collection of green bin organics. These statistics are a testament to the effectiveness of this innovative approach.
"It was a weird idea, but it's proven to be a brilliant one," said Jeff Lehman, Chair of the District of Muskoka. "The community has embraced this change, and the results are nothing short of remarkable."
But here's where it gets controversial: the clear bag requirement has also been extended to transfer stations and the local landfill. While some may question the need for such transparency, the results are undeniable. Lehman highlights the community's role in this success, with over 80% of transfer station customers adopting clear bags within weeks and almost universal compliance in curbside pickup.
"This is a community accomplishment," Lehman emphasized. "By extending the use of clear bags, we've not only increased the lifespan of our existing landfill, saving millions in taxpayer dollars, but we've also reduced our environmental impact."
