Australia is witnessing a surge in electric bike 'swarms', as large groups of riders gather for meet-ups across the country, causing both excitement and concern.
A spectacle or a safety hazard? Dozens of ebike enthusiasts recently descended upon a golf course in north Sydney, their tires leaving marks on the fairways. This incident, involving around 60 riders, sparked discussions about the potential dangers of such gatherings. But here's where it gets controversial: while some view these events as harmless fun, others worry about the safety of both riders and bystanders.
The trend isn't limited to Sydney. In Melbourne, approximately 100 ebike riders took to the streets, later converging for a planned gathering. These 'fat bikes', known for their powerful motors and off-road capabilities, have become a symbol of freedom for many young Australians. However, their growing popularity has led to concerns about reckless riding and the lack of regulation.
Community leaders like Peter McLean, CEO of Bicycle NSW, have received reports of similar incidents, with teenagers riding in large groups, sometimes without helmets. McLean acknowledges the benefits of ebikes for transportation but warns of the risks associated with high-powered models when operated irresponsibly.
Golf courses haven't been spared either. The general manager of Long Reef Golf Club, Ben Russell, described recent incidents where ebike riders caused disruption and minor damage to the course. As a result, the club is taking measures to enhance security.
Victoria Police is also aware of these gatherings, investigating reports of dangerous riding during a Melbourne meet-up. The issue of regulation is not new. Harold Scruby, CEO of the Pedestrian Council, previously highlighted the risks of unregulated fat bikes, which can be modified to exceed the capabilities of traditional bicycles.
In response to a fatal collision involving an ebike, the NSW Premier, Chris Minns, proposed reducing the power of ebikes to 250 watts. McLean supports the idea of a regulatory framework to address these concerns.
