A bold new step towards enhanced public safety has been taken by the British Transport Police (BTP) with their recent announcement of a live facial recognition (LFR) trial at London stations. This move, which aims to create a safer railway environment, has sparked both excitement and controversy.
The BTP's LFR trial is designed to test the technology's effectiveness in a railway setting, following extensive planning and research. The operation commenced at London Bridge station on Tuesday, with future deployments to be publicly announced in advance.
But here's where it gets controversial... The use of LFR cameras, which scan faces and compare them to a watchlist of serious offenders, has already proven successful on London's streets. The Metropolitan Police reports over 1,400 arrests and more than 1,000 charges or cautions since its introduction.
However, civil liberties group Big Brother Watch has raised concerns about the potential for arbitrary or discriminatory use of LFR. This comes as Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood defends her plans to expand facial recognition across England and Wales, despite an ongoing consultation on its use.
And this is the part most people miss... The LFR technology has an incredibly low false alert rate, with only 0.0003% of cases resulting in a false alert after scanning over three million faces. Chief Supt Chris Casey assures that passengers who wish to avoid scanning can use alternative routes, and images of unauthorized individuals will be immediately and permanently deleted.
The BTP is committed to making the railways safer and is inviting public feedback on the trial. Chief Supt Casey encourages passengers to scan the QR codes on posters to share their thoughts and help make the trial as effective as possible.
