India's Rising Tourism to the US: A 40% Surge and Beyond

The tourism landscape between India and the United States is experiencing a remarkable transformation. With a 40% increase in visitation since 2019, India has become the second-largest overseas market for US tourism, according to Fred Dixon, president and CEO of Brand USA. This surge in travel highlights the growing sophistication and spending power of Indian travelers, who are increasingly eager to explore beyond traditional US gateways.

The 12th edition of Brand USA Travel Week in Bengaluru showcased this trend. Dixon emphasized the importance of this market, noting that India is now among the top 10 source markets for most US destinations, and even the top 5 for some. This shift reflects the expanding horizons of Indian travelers, who are venturing deeper into the country.

The presence of a large US delegation at the event underscores the market's growing significance. This delegation includes 75 representatives from US destinations and travel businesses, engaging with Indian travel trade partners and media. The year 2026 is set to be a landmark for US tourism, driven by major global events.

The FIFA World Cup, for instance, will generate excitement across the country, not just among football fans. Coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States, the tournament will feature 48 teams in 11 host cities, from Seattle to Miami. This event, along with the Route 66 anniversary, will attract Indian travelers interested in self-drive holidays across the US.

Brand USA, as the national tourism marketing organization, is pivotal in promoting these events globally. The economic impact of Indian travelers is substantial, making them the second-highest spending market. Indian tourists are long-stay visitors who are discerning in their travel choices, making them a valuable asset to the US tourism economy.

Looking ahead, the outlook for the India-US travel corridor remains positive. With a decade of major sporting events, including the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, the Rugby World Cup in 2031, and the Winter Olympics in 2034, the demand for travel between the two countries is expected to continue climbing.
