A thousand jobs are vanishing in Cheshire, Connecticut, as Macy's shutters its fulfillment centers. This news, announced on Tuesday, is a significant blow to the local economy.
According to official notices sent to state and town officials, both Macy's locations on Knotter Drive and West Johnson Avenue are slated for closure. But here's where it gets controversial... While the majority of the nearly 1,000 affected workers will face layoffs this year, a small team of maintenance workers will remain employed until the spring of 2027 to oversee the closing process.
This isn't the first time Macy's has made such a move. In October of last year, the South Windsor distribution center also announced its closure, set for the beginning of 2026. This resulted in the elimination of 77 warehouse associates, 8 power equipment operators, 4 warehouse leads, and more. Job eliminations at South Windsor occurred between December 28, 2025, and January 10, 2026.
Macy's stated, "Macy’s, Inc. is continuing to simplify and modernize our supply chain to better serve customers and operate more efficiently." They are centralizing Backstage operations at their off-price facility in Columbus, OH. The company also added, "We’re committed to supporting our colleagues through this transition.”
Is this a necessary move for Macy's to stay competitive, or does it reflect broader challenges in the retail industry? What are your thoughts on how these closures impact the affected workers and the local communities? Share your opinions in the comments below!
