In fact, only six weeks earlier, the Twins had welcomed Derek Shelton as their new manager. The previous summer had seen ownership directing the front office to make further cuts to an already slim payroll, which culminated in a series of trades just before the deadline.
Historically regarded as a paragon of efficiency and stability in Major League Baseball, the Twins find themselves navigating a turbulent phase. As pitchers and catchers prepare for their first workout at the Lee Health Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida, on Thursday, it is likely that the roster will undergo additional revisions due to concerns about bullpen depth and an overabundance of left-handed outfield hitters.

During a news conference last month, Falvey echoed this sentiment, highlighting the resilience of the team. While Pohlad searches for a new president of business operations, he has opted not to replicate Falvey's initial role within baseball operations, demonstrating his confidence in Zoll’s capabilities. "If Jeremy Zoll earned the GM position a year ago, that speaks volumes about his qualifications," Pohlad emphasized. "There was stiff competition both internally and externally for that role, and I am fully committed to Jeremy as the right leader for this pivotal moment."
Zoll’s journey began eight years ago when he was recruited by Falvey as the director of minor league operations. A former baseball player at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, Zoll entered the major leagues in 2014 as a coordinator of advanced scouting for the Los Angeles Angels.
Although the Twins’ payroll remains significantly lower than it was two years prior, placing them among the bottom quartile of the league, they have managed to retain prominent players like Byron Buxton, Pablo Lopez, and Joe Ryan. This retention signals their intent to compete vigorously this season within the economically challenged American League Central division, even while trying to maintain a frugal approach.
Zoll explained, "There was a strategic rationale behind our decisions, aimed at avoiding a complete rebuild. We understand that regenerating talent quickly from within our system is far more feasible when we are starting with established or high-potential players already in the majors.
