A tale of struggles and setbacks: Mumbai Indians' WPL 2026 campaign.
In a candid admission, head coach Lisa Keightley revealed the challenges that plagued MI's title defense. The team's journey was riddled with injuries and a constant reshuffling of plans, leaving them unable to find their groove.
"We faced an uphill battle from the get-go," Keightley stated. "Key players were sidelined due to injuries and illnesses, forcing us to adapt and experiment with different combinations. It was a tough ask, and we just couldn't seem to find the right formula to gain momentum."
The injury woes began with retained all-rounder Hayley Matthews, whose quad niggle disrupted MI's plans for a new opening partnership. The team's reliance on overseas stars became evident as Nat Sciver-Brunt's illness, coupled with other combination tweaks, led to the resting and rotation of their best foreign players. A rare shuffle of their overseas quartet further compounded their troubles.
"We had a clear vision for our line-up going into the tournament," Keightley explained. "When Hayley was ruled out for three games, we had to quickly find alternatives. Replacing a world-class opener is no easy feat."
MI's 2025 championship-winning XI saw only one change for their 2026 opener - the absence of opener Yastika Bhatia, presumably due to an ACL-related absence. Ironically, the opening slot remained a persistent challenge.
After some trial and error, MI settled on S Sajana to partner Matthews at the top. Keightley praised Sajana's effort and intent, especially given the pressure of a mid-season role change. "We've explored various options at the top, and we believe Sajana and Hayley offer our best chance. They've worked tirelessly to find their rhythm and give us a solid start."
Keightley further highlighted Sajana's team-first mentality. "She demonstrated a remarkable willingness to step up and contribute to the team's success. Facing world-class bowlers is no easy task, but she embraced the challenge. Her dedication in training and her desire to do her best for the team are commendable. It was great to see her get some runs today."
Sajana's 25-ball 26 was the second-best score on the day, with captain Harmanpreet Kaur leading the charge with an unbeaten 82 off 48 balls. However, MI's target could have been more manageable had they not conceded 36 runs in just 12 deliveries during the slog overs. Ash Gardner and Georgia Wareham capitalized on the opportunity, targeting the expensive Matthews and Ismail.
As MI required 42 off the last three overs, Gardner brought on leg-spinner Wareham, who conceded just five singles. GG's death-overs specialist, Sophie Devine, then restricted MI to just 11 runs in the penultimate over, leaving Gardner to defend 26 in the final over. GG, with an impressive 0-8 record against MI, secured their first win over the defending champions, advancing to the Eliminator for the second consecutive year.
Keightley praised the Giants' execution at crucial moments. "They bowled exceptionally well and were simply too good for us today. The two-over swing after their break, where they conceded just 37 runs, was a significant turning point. Up until then, I felt we had control. That phase ultimately decided the game."
MI's league stage concluded with a record of three wins and five defeats, including three consecutive losses mid-season. They currently sit third on the table, owing to the best net run-rate (+0.059) among the three contenders vying for the remaining Eliminator spot. Significantly, for the first time in four seasons, MI's fate is not entirely in their hands, as they await the outcome of the bottom-of-the-table clash on Sunday to determine their playoff fate.
