Pam Ward, the veteran broadcaster, is far from retired after her recent departure from ESPN. With a remarkable three-decade career under her belt, Ward has been a familiar voice across various sports, from women's basketball to college football and softball. But now, she's ready for a change of pace. In an exclusive interview with Edward Lee of the Baltimore Sun, Ward revealed her plans for the future, sparking excitement among sports fans.
"I'm not ready to hang up my microphone just yet," Ward said with enthusiasm. "I'm in talks for another season with the WNBA, whether it's for a team or another role. It's the best summer job ever, and I can't wait to get back into it."
Ward's decision to leave ESPN was not an easy one. The demanding travel and long hours had taken their toll over the years. When her contract expired in December, she decided it was time to scale back. "I almost didn't re-sign a couple of years ago due to the travel and the toll it was taking on my well-being," she explained. "But this new opportunity presented itself, and I wanted to work just one more year, but it didn't quite work out as planned."
Now, Ward is seeking new broadcasting opportunities, eager to continue her career but on her own terms. She expressed her relief at the prospect of a more relaxed schedule, especially during the holidays. "I'm not missing the hectic travel and multiple games a week," she said. "This holiday season, I had the pleasure of enjoying some much-needed downtime, something I haven't experienced in over 30 years. It's been a refreshing change."
With her extensive experience and undeniable talent, Ward is a highly sought-after broadcaster. The WNBA, in particular, could benefit from her expertise. USA Network, under new ownership, is expanding its women's basketball coverage, and other partners like Ion, Prime Video, and NBC might also be interested in her services. Additionally, she could call local broadcasts for a specific team, providing a unique and personal touch to the games.
As the WNBA season approaches, Ward's future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: she's not going anywhere anytime soon. Fans can look forward to hearing her voice once again, bringing her expertise and passion to the court. With her talent and determination, Ward is poised to make a significant impact in the broadcasting world, even in her later years.
