Winter Storm Fern: Airlines Cancel 1,400+ Flights as Forecasters Warn of Devastating Weather
The travel industry is bracing for one of the biggest winter storms to hit the U.S. in recent memory, with airlines preemptively canceling over 1,400 flights through Saturday. The storm, dubbed 'Winter Storm Fern' by The Weather Channel, has already caused significant disruptions, with more than 350 flights canceled for Friday and over 1,065 cancellations on Saturday. This brings the total cancellations to over 1,400 by Thursday evening.
The cancellations come after days of warnings from forecasters about a potentially devastating winter storm that could spread heavy snow and ice across a wide area of the U.S., from Texas to the Deep South, up through the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Airlines have also been proactive in warning about the storm's impact on schedules, implementing flexible rebooking policies for airports along the storm's expected path.
Several major airports, including Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson, the world's busiest, and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), the nation's second-busiest, are expected to face severe disruptions through Monday. New York, Charlotte, Washington, Philadelphia, and Boston are also forecast to experience schedule-crippling weather from the storm before it exits the Northeast on Monday.
Delta Air Lines was the first to announce disruptions, citing safety concerns and canceling flights in North Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee. Other airlines, such as Southwest Airlines and American Airlines, have also canceled numerous flights, with Southwest canceling over 90 flights on Friday and 235 on Saturday, and American canceling over 550 mainline flights through Saturday night.
Travelers are advised to brace for possible disruptions across all airlines and even in areas outside the storm's path. For instance, a flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco could be delayed or canceled if the plane or crew is affected by icy conditions in Atlanta or snowy weather in Philadelphia.
